The indicators and metrics used in Food Futures are scientifically robust. Over 150 journal articles have been utilised along with a wide consultation with the scientific community.

  • Environmental Metrics

    Food Futures uses a wide range of environmental metrics including soil health, carbon footprint, slurry and manure management and agrochemcial use.

  • Economic & Efficiency Metrics

    Farms must be profitable and resilient. As the saying goes “It’s hard to be green if you are in the red”.

    This means making a good profit, but also: not taking any unnecessary financial risks, having good production efficiency and having good management and practices (well monitored).

  • Social Well-being Metrics

    Do our farmers have the capacity to cope mentally and physically with the new challenges they are facing?

    Getting farmers to focus on their “circle of influence”.

    Metrics which they can control (physical health etc.) and worry less about the ones they cannot (weather etc.).

    Need to understand the rural area, its conditions and nature in order to understand the potential vulnerability of the farmer.
